I'm not sure if I still have the box they came in but I use a splice on underground wire on 480 pivots. Then to finish it up, ive been coating the whole splice with scotchkote, a good 2 coats. After that i use a mastic pad over the whole splice, then use a good electrical tape over it. Put nolox inside the splice block tighten it down, then heat shink it. Get a good splice kit, i like the allen wrench ones. Last few splices we have done have held up well. It's similar in size and function to a two handled pruning shears. Supposed to do the same quality job, just not as convenient in tight quarters. Ask instead to borrow a linesman's older crimper. They had the same electric crimper tool, but said it cost them several thousand dollars. They used the tools and supplies in brudno's post above.

Rappahannock Electric spliced a new section of line in, so they evidently have full confidence in splices. If it's any help, the 240 line from the transformer pole to the wall mounted meter developed a short underground a month ago. They make an underground concrete vault that is fairly cheap. Would not use tape ever, will last couple years tops. This is what I use to splice underground, will last aslong as the wire if moisture stays out of it or you keep it deep enough you don't have to worry about freezing. Maybe a drone photo while dirt work is fresh to record what is where would be nice. Put in Manila envelope taped to each breaker box. Take an satellite picture and wheel measurement and Mark as many features on the paper. So many feet from NW corner of house, and so far from barn corner. Extra wire in the future WILL be helpful.Ģ. That depends how the house is currently wired of course.Īsk your electrician for opinions as well. It's better if it's in conduit of some sort so you can possibly pull it out if a repair is needed. It will never be as reliable as unspliced wire but still a viable option. There are underground splice kits such as this one. It will be located in a grass lawn and will not see any traffic above it other than a lawn mower. We have one pole that will pretty much serve no purpose and I was wondering if there would be a good way to remove the pole and put a reliable splice below the surface. Essentially we are just taking the meters off the poles and putting splices in their place.
